Lou Piniella, a former Allendale resident, turns 72 on Friday.
Piniella, an outfielder and manager with the New York Yankees, was born Aug. 28, 1943.
At 18, “Sweet Lou” signed with the Cleveland Indians, beginning an 18-year career with the Kansas City Royals, Indians and Yankees. During that time, Piniella batted .291 and slugged 102 home runs to go along with 766 career RBIs. After his playing days, Piniella went on to manage the Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Chicago Cubs. He retired in 2010 with a career record of 1,835-1,713.
